Ancient Astronauts Campaign

It is the year 62011 A.D. You are on the planet Mars.

The Blog

The game will hosted on this blog. I will invite all players to be contributors.

The Players

Netherwerks- playing a couple of Shen
Arkhein- playing "cannon fodder"
Kobold-playing Artó Patánalanya Human astronaut
Risus Monkey- playing a human adventurer
Migellito-playing a human adventurer
Zanazaz

The Scheme

The transactions of the game will consist of blog posts. A Turn will last from one Referee post to another. Simple player turns may be posted as comments to the Referee Turn post but more complicated player turns may be individual posts (please put the Turn # in the post title and labels). The referee and players may comment on its content if they like.

As for the sprockets and cogs of how this game will run I propose that, following character generation and the posting of all the character sheets, I will take a few days to figure out what’s going on with these characters then I will post the first turn. Players will have roughly two days to react to the turn, as I will attempt to post a new turn every other week day for each game on alternate days.

In order to speed up some situations or combats, I may request that players submit a plan and a few dice rolls rather than dragging every such situation out for weeks. I would play out these situations and post the results. If the encounter begins to go bad or seems too far removed from the players’ posted plans I will pause it and post the situation as the next turn.

Players may request to move any encounters to chat or Skype for detailed resolution and if we have a quorum, we will do so. Later the chat logs or similar would be posted to the blog.

Players that cannot keep to the schedule (or if an encounter goes chat or skype and can’t attend) may select another player to run their character or the character will be run as an NPC during their absence.

I’m hoping to have two volunteers for Vice-Referees as I previously posted. Risus Monkey has tentatively agreed to VR for the Swords & Glory game.

Character Generation

Everyone should prepare their complete character sheet and email it to me or post it on the blog. I will review and revise it as needed and repost the final sheet.

I’d also like everyone to write a brief character description or background. Length is up to you…it can be something like David’s background for Arto that was posted at ix, a paragraph, or three wishes. I reserve the right to edit these to fit better with campaign or setting though.

As for buying equipment, feel free to do so. The campaign will be starting in a Martian city so equipment will also be available in game.

If you haven't previously read the Humanspace Mars post at ix  please check it out. You may also want to read these overviews of Humanspace society and government and consider social class in character background.

Any questions?

Mosanu Iki is a hunchbacked, gray-bearded old man. Failing health, eyesight, and memory have taken a strain on him, making him grumpy most of the time. But he's still has his strength, and can lift a vat of lard over his head without too much difficulty. The old man also has a lifetime of skills that enable him survive and thrive in surprising ways. No one goes hungry when he is around, even though they may not want to know what they are eating. Whatever it is, it tastes good. He only goes by the name 'Cookie' while on jobs.

Cookie grew up amongst the dispossessed and unwashed humans who made their home and living in the hidden cracks and crevasses of orbital stations and laugh haul bulk freighters. Using forged papers, he joined the military and became a cook, Using his steady income, he brought his family out of poverty.

After decades of service, however, it was discovered that he had used forged papers to enter the military, and was discharged. Now a disgrace, his family would have nothing to do with him.

Unable to find reputable work, Cookie joined various mercenary groups, but discovered he could not just be a cook - but was expected to fight. Eventually he found contract work salvaging old space hulks and abandoned planet-side facilities. Cookie found he was good at it and after a few lucky hauls, became wealthy. His family welcomed him back with open arms.

Several years later his family had drained him of all his earnings and gotten him into debt. They would have nothing to do with him again. Cookie began to go on more and more dangerous jobs. Several near death brushes with alien monsters, mysterious radiation fields, and sadistic salvage law enforcement officials have left his body nearly broken, his mind a mess, and his bank account still in disarray.

Cookie figures that if he can just survive the next few years, he can earn enough money to get back into the good graces of his family again, and die happy.

  2. Looks like I'm stuck on a cell phone until Sunday night. In all likelihood I won't be able to get started until then.

    ---------------------

    Background
Taliat and Tabash are clone-shen bred on Mars as part of the private army of a petty Lordling who has since been dispossessed of his holdings due to the retaliation of a small consortium of his enemies who took it upon themselves to ruin him once and for all. Many of this Lord's clone-shen are now out of a job, and abandoned. since they belong to a foreign egg-group, they smell bad to the other clone-shen and cannot easily enter into another Lord's service. There was talk about possibly working towards avenging their fallen Lord, but since this was never specified in the contract of their service, and seeing as the Lord will no longer be able to pay them, nothing has come of this and indeed most of the clone-shen have all moved on to other things.

So now they salvage things, loot things, and act as freelancers and mercenaries operating from the seedy underbelly of Mars. If they ever accumulate enough wealth, perhaps they can set up a freehold amongst the asteroids and possibly start a nice freefall fern farm, centrifugal-trellis melon-ranch, or something like that.

They have found that they rather enjoy looting old abandoned estates, investigating ruins, and exploring grotty old space hulks. No shen dies of natural causes, so they are less than finicky about what types of odd jobs they take on in order to pay the bills. They also enjoy Opera, long walks by the dry sea bed, and pickles. Lots of pickles.

  5. Great idea for a PbP game. I like the idea of using a blog for PbP. I may have to try that out sometime. Keep up the great work with HSpace!
